The New Curiosity Shop's exhibit on the fundamental connections between magnetism and electricity.

The Cart and the Pendulum™ - Swing the magnet on a pendulum over a cart with one of several non-magnetic plates on it. Switch plates and the behavior of the cart changes dramatically, showing induction, eddy currents, and electromagnetism.

Spin the Spinning Magnet™ to produce alternating electrical current, seen with flashing red and green lights.

Then change the distance between magnet and coil and tilt the coil. Conservation of energy is clearly illustrated, as is the basic connection between magnetism and electricity.

Rotate the coil of wire around the magnet in Spinning Coil™ and lights show the phase of the induced electrical current. Tilt the magnet centered inside the coil, and watch the effect on the light on the coil, as you spin the coil again.

It's a transformer; it's a simple radio; it's electromagnetic induction; the Communicating Coils™ exhibit! Turn on the current in the big, fixed coil and watch when the lights flash and the compass flips in the little coil. Explore the effects of moving and turning the little coil in relation to the fixed coil.
